Rescuer warns of sick dogs at aging Detroit Animal Control facility

June 23, 2021, 10:02 PM

The executive director of Detroit Dog Rescue says her inbox is "flooded" with stories of sick dogs at the city's animal control facility — the result, she reportedly believes, of the building's age.

A "common respiratory issue" prompted the facility to reduce crowding this week by offloading at least 16 dogs to Kristina Rinaldi's dog rescue, Animal Control Director Mark Kumpf confirmed to WDIV.

A message posted by Rinaldi also described an infected dog taken from the facility last year. She tagged Mayor Mike Duggan, writing that "Some dogs are going in and will never have a chance to come out."

From WDIV:

Both Detroit Animal Care and Control and Detroit Dog Rescue said the city needs a new facility.

“It’s difficult to sanitize,” Kumpf said. “We do heroic things here to keep up with it.”
