Detroit Digest: 'Diamond Dogs' Does It Up Right Just Outside Eastern Market

August 13, 2021, 8:18 PM

Diamond Chapman of Diamond Dogs

Six days a week, you can find Diamond Chapman dressing up hot dogs with chili or cheese or grilled onions at her Diamond Dogs stand at the corner of Gratiot and Russell, just outside of Eastern Market.

Chapman's wieners go far beyond the ordinary cart: Chicago-style, turkey, beef, chicken, veggie and Polish and Italian sausages. She steams all the dogs, and also grills them on request, and serves them on regular, whole wheat or poppyseed buns.

She launched the stand about 11 years ago, inspired by the entrepreneurial spirit of the many taco stands she visited while living for a year in Tucson, Ariz.

Detroit Digest host Carlos Parisi, a fan of the stand at 1388 Gratiot Ave., stopped by the other day to talk to Chapman and sample her offerings. (Watch the video below.)
