There's always a certain giddiness among customers at supermarket openings, and today was no different.

Grand Rapids-based Meijer on Wednesday opened its long-awaited 42,000-square-foot Rivertown Market at 1745 E. Jefferson, east of I-75.

"It's more convenient and less expensive than Whole Foods," said Neena Singhar, an early shopper.

It's Meijer's third Detroit store, joining one on Woodward and 8 Mile Road and another on Grand River.
