Nearly 90 percent of Michigan State's students, faculty and staff are fully vaccinated against Covid, the university says. Exemptions for medical or religious reasons were granted to 3,138 people.
The school reported that 224 were denied exemptions, the Lansing State Journal reports.
MSU issued a mandate in July saying that people needed to be vaccinated by Aug. 31 and fill out a verification form. More than 63,000 of 67,000 MSU students, staff and faculty completed the form by Friday, with 89.9 percent saying they were fully vaccinated, the Journal reports.
By comparison, only 58.5% of Michiganians over 16 are fully vaccinated (not counting booster shots) and 68.4% have one dose.
MSU reported 6.3 percent of the staff and students were not vaccinated and 3.69 percent were partially vaccinated.
The Journal reports:
Anyone who refuses a Covid vaccine but is not eligible for an exemption will face discipline, MSU spokesman Dan Olsen said. For students, that could mean expulsion, while faculty and staff would be referred to their department’s human resources office for discipline ranging up to termination.
