Malik Hairston, a Renaissance High basketball star who graduated in 2004, is back home as a Detroit restaurant co-owner after a pro sports career with teams in San Antonio, Austin, Italy, Turkey, Greece, Israel and France.

Malik Hairston, a 6' 5" guard and forward, led Renaissance High to a 27-0 season in 2004.

The 34-year-old former NBA player last summer opened Spudz & Clucks, a fast-casual spot on Grand River Avenue, with brother Richard Hairston and friend Ty Haygood. They offer ten styles of loaded fries (photos below), chicken wings, chicken sandwiches and burgers.

Samurai Fries are served Hibachi-style with one of four protein items (chicken, shrimp, salmon or steak, plus vegetables tossed in a garlic butter sauce ($10-$16). The menu also features fried cauliflower bites and the Breakfast Butter Clucker -- fried chicken tenders drizzled with honey butter between a waffle-like bun ($11).

Beverages include milk shakes (vanilla, strawberry or chocolate). The lone dessert item is sweet potato fries tossed in brown sugar and cinnamon, with pecans and vanilla ice cream ($8).
