Now AG Nessel is investigating Mackinaw City hotel shenanigans

February 10, 2022, 7:51 AM

Followers of Up North ripoffs may recall the story, last spring, of the Middle of the Night Hotel Eviction Incident in Mackinaw City, in which two women and five children were evicted from their lodgings, basically because they complained that their toilet was overflowing.

Not only that, they were insulted by the front-desk clerk, and the local police did nothing.

Now that same hotel turns up in a complaint filed by Attorney General Dana Nessel's office.

The AG's press release states:

Michigan Attorney General Dana Nessel issued a Notice of Intended Action (NIA) to three Mackinaw City hotels following an investigation into business practices related to customer reservations.

The investigation resulted from consumer complaints and focused on the Beach House Hotel, Crown Choice Inn & Suites, and Hamilton Inn Select Beachfront.

"The complaints allege instances where consumers book rooms at hotels that, while advertised as available and the reservations ultimately confirmed, were in fact closed without notice to the consumer. Upon arrival to the closed hotel, the consumer is directed to the Hamilton Inn and given a 'substitute' room with non-comparable amenities. The complaints also allege consumers who decline to stay at the Hamilton Inn are denied refunds citing a 72-hour cancellation policy. The refunds are denied even though the consumer was not made aware of the original hotel's closure at any time prior to the consumer arriving in Mackinaw City," the NIA states.

You know where that lady got kicked out last spring? The Crown Choice Inn & Suites. You know what else? It's owned by the Lieghio family, and they own pretty much all the lodging and much of the dining options in that tip-of-the-Mitten town, eight restaurants and 28 hotels. No wonder the police did nothing. We're sure the weak apology they offered for the unspeakably rude desk clerk (named Lieghio) last spring -- that he was suspended and might be fired -- was something they were chuckling over by the time the circus moved on.

Here's what happened then. We can't imagine such gracious hosts might be pulling bait-and-switch tricks on unsuspecting tourists:
