Betsy DeVos: "There were more than a few people who had those conversations."
Michigan Republican Betsy DeVos, secretary of education under President Trump, confirmed publicly that she considered invoking the 25th Amendment along with other cabinet members to remove her boss after last year's Jan. 6 riot.
DeVos resigned Jan. 7, just short of Trump's final days. She tells USA Today in a subscriber-only article that Vice President Mike Pence told her he wouldn't support using the 25th Amendent, and his backing was necessary for it to succeed.
"I spoke with the vice president and just let him know I was there to do whatever he wanted and needed me to do or help with, and he made it very clear that he was not going to go in that direction or that path," DeVos told USA Today.
"I spoke with colleagues. I wanted to get a better understanding of the law itself and see if it was applicable in this case. There were more than a few people who had those conversations internally."
The 25th Amendment to the Constitution, adopted in 1967, allows the temporary transfer of presidential powers and duties to the vice president on the initiative of the vice president with a majority cabinet members.
