The election year is only getting more interesting.

Attorney General Dana Nessel is seeking a special prosecutor to investigate a group of nine Republican figures, including Matthew DePerno, her likely opponent in November, the Detroit News reported Sunday night.

At issue are allegations that the group engaged in a "conspiracy" to gain improper access to voting machines.

Nessel would like the special prosecutor to consider potential criminal charges against DePerno and other including state Rep. Daire Rendon, R-Lake City and Barry County Sheriff Dar Leaf, Craig Mauger of the News reports.

The Attorney General's Office notes in its formal request that the conflict of interest Nessel has with DePerno running requires an independent look at the matter.

The News reports on the targeted group:

The group's efforts involved convincing local clerks to hand over tabulators, taking the tabulators to hotels or rental properties in Oakland County, breaking into the machines, printing "fake ballots" and performing "tests" on the equipment.

Tyson Shepard, DePerno's campaign manager, tells the News that Nessel has a "history of targeting and persecuting her political enemies," and called her actions unethical.
