Former Grand Rapids Congressman Peter Meijer, whose re-election bid last year was harmed because he voted to impeach President Donald Trump, announced Monday that he's running for U.S. Senate in 2024.
"My wife and I prayed hard about this race and how we can best serve our state and our nation," Meijer said in a press release posted on social media. "We considered every aspect of the campaign, and are confident we have the best chance of taking back this seat for Republicans and fighting hard for a conservative future."
Meijer, 35, a one-term Congressman who lost in the Republican primary in 2022, is running for the seat held by Sen. Debbie Stabenow, who is not running for re-election. He already faces a tough challenge in the Republican primary against candidates including former U.S. Rep. Mike Rogers of Brighton and former Detroit police Chief James Craig.
On the Democratic side, candidates include Congresswoman Elissa Slotkin, who appears to be the choice of the Democratic party, and actor and businessman Hill Harper of Detroit, State Board of Education President Pamela Pugh of Saginaw and former state Rep. Leslie Love of Detroit.
Meijer is an Iraq War veteran and the grandson of the founder of the Meijer chain. He attended West Point before enlisting in the Army Reserves. He deployed to Iraq where he conducted intelligence operations.
In Congress he served on the Foreign Affairs, Homeland Security and Science committees.
"My family taught me the value of hard work, Michigan values, and the importance of service," he said.
