Federal prosecutors haven't given up on recovering money it says former Detroit Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick owes taxpayers for restitution as a result of his criminal conviction for public corruption in 2013.
The latest: Federal prosecutor have discovered more than $6,700 they want to apply toward the more than $820,000 he owes taxpayers, Robert Snell of the Detroit News reports.
Snell reports:
The money was discovered in late March after prosecutors ordered Michigan Treasury officials to hold onto any money that might belong to Kilpatrick, including unclaimed property or tax refunds. State Treasury officials responded late last month, saying they had found $6,704.07, including overpayments to the city of Detroit, refunds, outstanding checks and vendor checks from the Financial Industry Regulatory Authority Inc., a not-for-profit group that oversees U.S. broker dealers and protects investors.
The cash discovery is the latest development in a years-long attempt to hold accountable a corrupt politician that prosecutors portrayed as an unremorseful ex-con who has lied in the past about his ability to pay restitution while pursuing a life of luxury. That includes leasing a $90,000 luxury SUV last year, several months before his wife's consulting firm bought an $807,000 home in Novi while the former Detroit mayor continues to owe more than $1.6 million in restitution to taxpayers and back taxes.
In a court filing on Friday, the government noted that Kilpatrick is only paying the minimum $150 a month for restitution. Kilpatrick disputes that he owes the money and wants a hearing to address the matter.
Kilpatrick currently operates an online ministry, Movemental Ministries, out of Georgia.
Kilpatrick has says that ultimately wants to return to Detroit.
