A Detroit woman who shot at federal agents while they were executing a search warrant at her apartment on the city's east side in 2021 was sentenced Tuesday in U.S. District Court to seven years in prison. No one was hit by the gunfire.
Gloria Bush, 42, had pleaded guilty to assaulting a federal officer and using and carrying a firearm during and in relation to a crime of violence, the U.S. Attorney's Office said.
Court documents allege that in April 2021 around 6:45 a.m., the Drug Enforcement Administration Special Response Team executed a search warrant at Bush’s apartment on Saint Aubin Street in the Lafayette Park area. The warrant related to an eight-defendant indictment out of North Dakota involving trafficking of oxycodone and fentanyl.
After federal agents approached the apartment door, announced their presence and attempted to enter the residence, Bush fired two shots in their direction, authorities charged. One bullet struck a shield that one of the agents was holding.
“This case demonstrates how our federal law enforcement partners put their lives at risk every day doing the work necessary to keep our community safe,” said Detroit U.S. Attorney Dawn Ison in a statement. “This defendant’s actions not only endangered the lives of federal agents, but also the lives of all those living around her who could have been struck by gunfire.”
