It's not everyday you see world renowned cellist Yo-Yo Ma in an elementary school.
But on Thursday Ma, former New York City Ballet principal dancer Damian Woetzel and other artists visited Spain Elementary Middle School in Detroit to highlight the importance of arts in education, according to Ann Zaniewski of the Detroit Free Press.
“The whole idea of this is that the arts, and arts and culture, is a unique opportunity and is a unique resource to bring to everything we do in life,” Woetzel told the children gathered in the school auditorium, according to the Freep report.
Earlier that morning, the group stopped at individual classrooms.
