Family Upset No Criminal Charges Are Filed in Northland Mall Death

September 19, 2014, 12:00 AM

The family of a man who died while struggling with security guards at Northland Mall in Southfield on Jan. 28  are none too happy about a decision by the Oakland County Prosecutor's Office.

WDIV reports that the prosecutor's office has decided not to  file criminal charges against the guards who pepper sprayed and subdued  25-year-old,  McKenzie Cochran during a struggle.

The stations reports that Oakland County Prosecutor Jessica Cooper said Thursday that an investigation found the guards didn't intend to injure McKenzie Cochran.

The struggle came after a shop owner reported that Cochran was being threatening.  The death was ruled an accidental asphyxia.

Cochran family lawyer Gerald Thurswell says relatives "are devastated ... very upset somebody is not going to be held accountable in the criminal justice system," WDIV reports.

A civil suit has been filed in the matter.
