On Sunday at the Redford Theater in Detroit -- one of the cooler movie houses around -- 31-year-old filmmaker Walter V. Marshall unveils his documentary "Cody High."

The film, to be shown at 5:30 p.m., chronicles the nonprofit group Life Remodeled's efforts to revitalize Detroit one neighborhood at a time.

Last year's renovation, remodeling and beautification projects targeted Cody, two other schools and 300 blocks in the surrounding area.

Julie Hinds of the Detroit Free Press writes:

In August, more than 10,000 volunteers poured into the Cody Rouge neighborhood for a weeklong effort. About 3,000 volunteers came from General Motors and 1,700 from Quicken Loans. Others were from Chrysler, Barton-Malow, Microsoft, Taubman Centers, Ikea, the UAW, Skillman Foundation and several churches.

Marshall doesn't sugarcoat the message, the Freep says, but rather tries to show with honesty and compassion the challenges the community faces.
