Eight U-M Employees Earn Base Salaries That Exceed $500,000

For some folks in particular, it pays to work for a university.

Gary Heinlein of the Detroit News reports that eight employeesd at the University of Michigan have a base pay that exceeds $500,000.

The highest salary goes to medical system executive vice president Michael Johns, who earns $769,080 a year, followed by U-M President Mark Schlissel, who earns $750,000. The News cites the latest public disclosure report issued this week.

The News reports that the list does not include the school’s basketball and football coaches. Both their  total compensation far exceeds what they made this year in base salaries, the News reports.

The News reports that basketball coach John Beilein earns a base of $350,000, but signed a 2013 contract extension calling for an additional $2.1 million per year. Former football coach Brady Hoke is listed at $300,000 but received retention and incentive bonuses that brought his total pay to more than $2.3 million before he was fired, Heinlein wrote. 

Other top paid employees include: Interim Chief Financial Officer Douglas Strong, $639,849; Medical school dean James Woolliscroft $610,611.44 and Interim Athletic Director Jim Hackett and chief investment officer Erik Lundberg, who earn $600,000.
