Ryan Gosling was questioned by police in Detroit four years ago, he tells the Los Angeles Times.

Gosling first came to the city while shooting "The Ides of March," a 2011 film directed by and costarring George Clooney.

When they were done shooting in Detroit, he bought an HD digital video camera and stayed behind, exploring the city and shooting footage of empty buildings, Mark Olsen of the LA Times reports. That footage he took was used in the opening of "Lost River," which he wrote and directed. The film makes its U.S. premiere Saturday night at the South by Southwest Film Conference and Festival in Austin, which describes it here.

At one point, Gosling says, he was detained when police officers thought he was trying to steal copper from buildings.

"I'm not proud that I was arrested, but it did give me one of the central pieces for the main character," he says of "Lost River."
