Revision of April 14 article:
At a downtown Detroit pop-up Thursday night, chefs Lester Gouvia and Frederick Douglas unite for three Caribbean-inspired courses at the first FoodLab Table pop-up benefit. The location, with open seating any time from 7-11 p.m., is the Checker Bar, 124 Cadillac Square.
Gouvia owns Demitart Gourmet, a Royal Oak caterer and food truck called Norma G's -- "a tribute to my mother and her cooking." He presented pop-ups at St. CeCe’s in Corktown last May and July, and had a booth at last June's 11-day Downtown Street Eats at Cadillac Square.
Douglas is co-owner of a sweet potato treats maker called Crème Détroipolis, which he started with chef Johnny Jenkins.
Here's their menu:
- Sweet potato coconut curry soup.
- Melongene (stewed eggplant with sweet onions and Roma tomatoes in a marinara sauce, served with Jasmine-scented rice and fried plantains) OR chicken curry roti (chicken, chickpeas, gold potatoes in curry, served with paratha roti).
- Vernor chocolate cake,
Tickets are here for $20. The cost at the door is $25.
FoodLab is a four-year-old networking community of local start-ups and food-related entrepreneurs.
