Gilbert's Rocket Fiber Internet Service Launches Website; HQ Will Be on Woodward

April 15, 2015, 5:59 PM

Detroit's superfast new Internet provider is surfacing.

Dan Gilbert's downtown-based fiber-optic Internet service, Rocket Fiber, has launched a new website. And DBusiness reports the company will be headquartered at 1505 Woodward Ave.

Other founders, besides Gilbert, include,  Edi Demaj, Marc Hudson and Randy Foster.

For $70 a month, the website says:

Gigabit Internet is up to 100 times faster than the average residential connection.  That means super fast browsing, crystal clear video, lag free gaming and lightning-quick access to the cloud. Rocket Fiber will make your old connection feel like dial-up. We’ll treat you right too.

The company also offers HDTV "soon," which it says will "change the way you view and interact with your television, tablet and smart phone.

Services are expected to be offered by late 2015 in downtown Detroit. After that, it's not clear where it will be offered next.

To get started in downtown Detroit, we had to build  approximately six miles of backbone fiber starting in September of 2014.  The backbone ring will allow Rocket Fiber to connect residences and businesses throughout the Central Business District in 2015 and will serve as the core infrastructure for our network.

In order to take advantage of street closures for existing construction projects, we asked our crews to build the backbone ring  in just five short months.   To execute on such a tall order, construction advanced at an incredible pace and the crews worked overnight from 7 p.m. – 5 a.m. in many areas to avoid disrupting traffic.  Coupling all of this with a fast approaching Michigan winter, we didn’t have a moment to spare.
