According to Buzzfeed, as he prepared for his 1968 run for the White House, the elder Romney told reporters that releasing his most recent tax returns was gimmicky and provided voters with very little real information about his financial situation.
He made a good point because, for all the media hype about presidential candidate tax returns, it's not as though large numbers of voters cast ballots based on Mitt Romney's 2010 1040 form.
True to his belief that the recent tax return release was silly, George Romney didn't play that game. Instead he released 12 years of returns so voters and reporters would have a fuller picture of his financial decisions. -- JTW
