Update: State Sen. Virgil Smith Arrested on Gun Charges in Domestic Dispute

Monday, 10:36 a.m.:- State Sen. Virgil Smith was arrested on suspicion of aggravated assault with a gun and malicious destruction of property in connection with an incident Sunday, the Detroit Free Press reports.Smith allegedly fired multiple shots, striking his girlfriend's 2015 Mercedes. No one was injured. He is still being held, the Freep reported, and his cooperating.

Sunday, 6:53 p.m.:  Sen. Virgil Smith was arrested around noon on Sunday and was still in custody in the late afternoon, the Detroit News reports. The car that  Smith allegedly shot at belonged to a woman identified as his ex-wife and current girlfriend.

From earlier Monday 

State Sen. Virgil Smith of Detroit has some explaining to do and it has nothing to do with pending legislation.

Detroit Police are investigating the firing of a weapon at Smith's home in the 18000 block of Wexford Avenue, WDIV reports.

Smith supposedly got into an argument with his girlfriend and fired several shots from a shotgun and struck her 2015 Mercedes. No one was hurt. 

The Domestic Violence division is handling the investigation, which began Sunday morning, an unnamed source tells WDIV. No arrest has been made.

The girlfriend is an Ann Arbor business woman, according to the station.
