FBI agent David P. Gelios has been named the new head of the Detroit FBI, replacing Paul Abbate, who is headed to D.C. to head up the Washington Field Office.

FBI Director James B. Comey announced the appointment Tuesday.

Gelios most recently served as the chief inspector of the FBI’s Inspection Division. His duties included overseeing all FBI field office inspections, national program reviews and agent-involved shooting investigations.

He's been with the FBI since 1995.

Gelios is a native of Ohio and graduate of Ball State University in Muncie, Ind. He is former high school teacher, college coach, and outreach officer for the University of California Office of the President, according to a release by the FBI.

Gelios is expected to assume the new post in October.
