Many Suburbs Asking For Tax Hikes Next Week Just To Keep Basic Services

About three dozen communities and school districts in Wayne, Oakland and Macomb counties are asking voters for tax hikes in the Aug. 7 primary election to support services from police and fire protection to libraries to veterans services to major road improvements, the Free Press reports.
The problem: Property values are down, meaning tax collections have dwindled.
Officials across the metro area are trying to keep their basic services.
In addition, the small millage request for the Detroit Institute of Arts will be on ballots across the region.
