Curt Guyette, an investigative reporter for the Michigan chapter of the American Civil Liberties Union, isn't a guy who likes to bathe in the limelight, or for that matter, Flint water.
These days he's finally getting credit -- he's been on "The Rachel Maddow Show" and joins her again Wednesday night in Flint -- as the investigative reporter who was dogged about helping reveal the Flint water crisis. His reports helped it get wider attention from the publlc, state and federal officials, and mainstream media.
His latest article was posted Sunday night at The Daily Beast.
We reposted one of Guyette's early reports, headlined Scary: Leaded Water and One Flint Family's Toxic Nightmare, six months ago on July 9. Guyette dug and dug and questioned the state's claims -- some prefer the word "lies" -- that the water in Flint was OK to drink. He's quick to credit others for also helping expose the disaster, including a group of concerned citizens in Flint, Miguel del Toral of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency who leaked a key memo about the questionable water, and Marc Edwards, a Virginia Tech professor and expert on water quality, who helped show that the water was unsafe to drink.
Deadline Detroit's editor sat with Guyette the other day at his ACLU office on Woodward in Detroit, where he writes for an ACLU blog called Michigan Democracy Watch Blog. His work on the Flint crisis has also appeared in Metro Times.
