After planning to open in July, actor Mark Wahlberg's hamburger chain, Wahlburgers, officially opened on Monday at 569 Monroe Street in Detroit's Greektown to long lines outside and a packed house inside.

It's the first of six outlets planned for Michigan. The place has two bars, downstairs and upstairs.

Competition downtown for burgers is expected to heat up in the coming year -- not to mention that just down the street on Monroe is Five Guys, a popular chain that originated out of Arlington, Va. and serves up a pretty decent burger. Shake Shake, a burger chain out of New York, is supposed to open next year in the First National Building near Campus Martius.

And just a few blocks away from Wahlburgers, the Basement Burger Bar, with locations in Farmington and Canton, will open soon on Brush Street. Then there are standbys such as Checker Bar, Harry's Detroit, Bookies and the Anchor Bar.

It hasn't been all success for the burgers downtown. Bagger Dave's closed its downtown location in late 2015 after about two years.

We stopped by Wahlburgers around lunchtime to take a look at the place and snap a few photos.
