Eastern Market Print Studio Marks Banned Books Week

September 28, 2016, 5:21 PM

To commemorate "Banned Books Week," which runs through Oct. 1, an artist team for a letterpress printing shop in Eastern Market, Signal-Return, has created art that will be displayed at the store.

The art consists of long scrolls formed from pages of George Orwell’s often-banned book, 1984. Titles of banned books have been set in wood type and printed over these long scrolls, a media release says.

In addition to that, Signal-Return will be holding events Wednesday and Thursday night at its shop at 1345 Division. Events are free.

On Wednesday, from 7-9 p.m.,  a poetry reading that will involve people reading works by and about those who have been imprisoned, exiled or executed because of their writings.

From 7-9 p.m. Thursday, there will be a "Slam Event," which is described this way:

In the introduction to the graphic novel version of his classic work "Fahrenheit 451," author Ray Bradbury suggests that readers "should name the one book that he/she would most want to memorize and protect from any censors" and further consider "why it would be a valuable asset to be recited and remembered in the future." So, what book would you choose? What text would you memorize and protect for posterity?

(Take a deep breath! So much to choose from, we understand!) Join us this evening certainly to share your responses and perhaps to recite your chosen text--or excerpts of it -- in the poetry slam to follow. Prizes will be awarded.
