A company that will hire, train and supervise Detroit streetcar operators is looking for men and women interested in carrying passengers up and down Woodward next year.

Transdev North America, based in Lombard, Ill., will handle daily operations of the 3.3-mile QLine system for M-1 Rail. On Friday it posted a job description, qualifications and an "Apply Now" linlk.

The first of Detroit's six red and white streetcars was delivered last month by Brookville Equipment Corp. of Pennsylvania. The full fleet is scheduled to be here this year, with operations set to start as soon as April between Larned Street and West Grand Boulevard.

Transdev's posting describes the full-time job, but doesn't say how many operators it'll hire or what they'll earn. These are among details given:

  • Applicants must be at least 21.
  • High school diploma or equivalent is required.
  • Must have a commercial driver's license or be able to get one within three weeks, if hired.
  • Must have satisfactory performance and attendance in past jobs.
  •

The contractor, which is North America's largest private sector transit operator, also runs streetcar operations and maintenance in New Orleans (since 2009) and Cincinnatti (since last month). Overall, it says, "we manage over 200 transportation contracts for cities, transit authorities and airports." The firm has about 17,000 employees.
