Maccabees in Midtown Detroit Reopens Next Week with Asian-Inspired Menu

February 27, 2017, 4:19 PM

Maccabees Midtown at 5057 Woodward Ave. across from the Detroit Institute of Arts, opened in late 2012, but seemed to sputter along the way.

Now, it plans to reopen Monday with a brand new Asian-inspired menu with a Detroit twist, reports Crain's Detroit Business.

Maccabees Traders, formerly Maccabees Midtown, is under the new ownership of operating partner David Kraus, a West Bloomfield native and Chicago restaurateur. He leads the relaunch along with the two original owners, reports Kurt Nagl of Crain's. Rafael Esparaza will serve as new executive chef.

"I'm so humbled and proud to be opening up my newest endeavor in the greatest city in the world," Kraus writes on Facebook.

The restaurant had been closed on weekdays in recent weeks and but has remained  open for brunch on weekends.

"Detroit is a new brand," Kraus tells Crain's. "The (previous) restaurant had limited success recently. Full service wasn't necessarily their forte, and they had a vision that a lot more could happen," Kraus said of the restaurant's owners and his current partners. Peter Berishaj, who also owns Gateway Deli at 333 W Fort St. in downtown Detroit, is another owner.

The new menu will have Vietnamese fish-sauce chicken wings, pork and duck buns, shrimp bahn mi and jasmine rice dumpling soup, Vernors-glazed pork belly and tofu steaks.
