Meet MoGo, Detroit's newest form of mass transit.

That Downtown Detroit Partnership affiliate announces a nonprofit bike share system that begins in late May.

The system will have 430 bikes and 43 stations throughout 10 neighborhoods, including downtown, Woodbridge, Southwest Detroit  and Corktown, says Lisa Nuszkowski, executive director of MoGo - Detroit Bike Share.

It's designed for errands, visits and similar transportation needs, rather than recreational use, since basic trips are limited to 30 minutes and up to three miles.  After that, users pay extra.

Here are details:

  • A basic pass costs $8 per day for unlimited 30-minute trips for 24 hours.
  • A monthly pass is $18 and annual pass is $80.
  • An access pass for all users costs $5 per year.
  • Those with day passes who go over 30 minutes pay an additional $4. The fee is $2 for those with monthly or annual passes.

Customers can drop off a bike at one station and pick up another one there or at any location.

Two phone apps provide real-time availability and location data, and more:

  • Transit App lets users see the number of available bikes and empty docks at nearby stations, plus directions and an approximate trip time to your destination. It also lets users buy a daily pass.
  • Cyclefinder App shows available bikes and empty docks system-wide. A timer can be set to alert riders when 25 minutes have passed. Users also can also track distance traveled, average speed, calories burned and carbon dioxide emissions saved.

The sturdy $1,200 bikes are from PBSC Urban Solutions, a Montreal company that make them in New York. Customers will be charged $1,200 for an unreturned bike.

MoGo operates in collaboration with the city, Henry Ford Health System and Health Alliance Plan. Bikes are stored and maintained at a 10,0000-square-foot warehouse in Detroit's Milwaukee Junction neighborhood off East. Grand Boulevard.
