Muslim Customer Sues Little Caesars Over Pork Pepperoni

May 26, 2017, 8:02 AM

Mohamad Bazzi, a Muslim, is suing Little Caesars for $100 million, alleging he was given pizza with pepperoni with pork instead of halal pepperoni.  Eating Pork is forbidden under Islamic law.

The lawsuit filed in Wayne County Circuit Court alleges he twice ordered halal pizza from the shop on Schaefer in Dearborn that were topped with regular pepperoni, which traditionally has pork, reports Ann Zeniewski of the Detroit Free Press. The boxes were labeled "halal," which means the food complies with Muslim diets.

Majed Moughni, Bazzi's attorney, tells the Freep that he rushed to file the lawsuit Thursday, just before Ramadan, to keep other Muslims from eating forbidden food.

"It's really upsetting," Moughni said. "My clients want the public to know. Especially during Ramadan, it would be a travesty if Muslims ... in Dearborn bought pizza from Little Caesars and discovered they were eating pork."

A Little Caesars spokeswoman didn't immediately return messages seeking comment.
