The city of Auburn Hills announced Thursday it plans to push for The Palace to be rezoned as a tech and research District, adding to what the city boasts is a well-established "high-tech community where dozens of major corporations from thirty-two countries have a presence."

Working in cooperation with Palace Sports & Entertainment, the rezoning request will go before the city's Planning Commission on June 14, according to a city press release. The city determined that the facility could not sustain itself as a sports arena and must be razed. The Pistons plan to play in the new Little Caesars Arena in Detroit this coming season.

Meanwhile, the Pistons plan to continue using the practice facility and executive offices in Auburn Hills for another season.

“I am pleased to know that the owners of the franchise and the arena are eagerly willing to work with us to produce an outcome that is favorable to not only the owner but also to the City,” Auburn Hills Mayor Kevin McDaniel says in a statement.
