Alex Young

Alex Young, a James Beard-winning chef and former co-owner of Zingerman's Roadhouse for 15 years, is branching out.

Young, who left Zingerman's three months ago, has purchased a nearly $2 million restaurant space, the Creekside Grill in Scio Township, just four miles west of Ann Arbor, to start a French restaurant, reports Jessica Haynes of MLive.

"I had a plan before I bought it. Once I looked at the bones, it just grew on me," Young tells MLive. "Now we're working on the finer details. It's my intention to build a great restaurant."

The building has sat empty for more than two years.

His bio on the Zingerman's website says this:

At the age of 17 with no professional culinary training, Alex moved to New York City and landed his first kitchen job cooking for The Central Falls Roadshow. From there he worked in many different kitchens throughout the country, helping open New York’s China Grill with Chef Mako Tenaka, working for Chef Reed Heron at San Francisco’s Corona Bar and Grill, and opening The Pittsburgh Fish Market in Pennsylvania.

He was named the first corporate chef of the Hilton Restaurant Group before being introduced to Zingerman’s co-founders Paul Saginaw and Ari Weinzweig in 2000 and beginning the journey to opening Zingerman’s Roadhouse together. (See video below to learn more about Young)
