Veggie burger from Detroit Vegan Soul

There was a time not so long ago where a vegan in Metro Detroit had very little to choose from.

That's changed. Sure, as Tom Perkins of Metro Times writes, we're no San Francisco or New York, but there certainly is a healthy selection around town.

Perkins has compiled a list of 70 places to get vegan food. Some like GreenSpace Cafe in Ferndale are purely vegan. Others like Buddy's Pizza have vegan offerings alongside choices for carnivores.

Here's sampling of Perkins' selections and his brief descriptions:

Eggplant confit, garlic-roasted brussels & caramelized onion #vegan pizza (GreenSpace Cafe)

Detroit Vegan Soul: 8029 Agnes St., Detroit: -- Detroit's only all-vegan restaurant.

The Clean Plate, 45629 Hayes Rd.: Macomb -- The east side's most comprehensive vegan and vegetarian restaurant.

PJ's Lager House, 1254 Michigan Ave., Detroit --  The Corktown dive bar offers a good selection of tasty vegan sandwiches like the bahn mi, po' boy, or bbq tempeh sandwich, among many more plant-based menu items.

Pepe Z at EL Club, 4114 W. Vernor Hwy., Detroit -- There's a lot to love about Pepe Z's, not the least of which is Pepe's housemade vegan cashew cheese. Three pies are topped with it.

Pie-Sci , 5163 Trumbull Ave., Detroit -- Most Pie-Sci pizzas can be made vegan for a couple extra bucks

Jerusalem Pizza, 26025 Greenfield Rd., Southfield -- The kosher pizzeria will make any of its pies with vegan cheese, offers veggie pepperoni and sausage for toppings, cooks a vegan chicken parm, and stacks lots of vegan sandwiches. (But watch out for the egg!)

See the full list.
