'Detroit' Riot Film Lags at Box Office -- #8 in Opening Weekend

Director Kathryn Bigelow's film "Detroit," which tells the story of the 1967 riot and the murder an brutality at the Algiers Motel, grossed $7.2 million over the weekend, according to Box Office Mojo.

That's "a limp result," Brooks Barnes writes in The New York Times.

The revenue puts the film in eighth place in weekend rankings. The #1 film is "The Dark Tower," which took in $19.5 million followed by Dunkirk, which grossed $17.6 million.

"Detroit" opened nationwide in 3,007 theaters over the weekend. It cost $34 million to make.
