The dangers of having a gun, even for purpose of good, played out on Detroit's east side on Monday.

A man with a gun tried to save his 53-year-old neighbor who was being mauled by a stray dog around Goodwin and Westminster, WXYZ's Breanne Palmerini reports.

So he shot and hit the dog and accidentally hit the woman as well. She died at a hospital. The dog was hit at least once and ran off.

The victim was walking to go babysit, police say.

The man, licensed to carry a concealed pistol, was attempting to help, says Police Capt. Darin Szilagy. He "fired several shots. Unfortunately one of those shots struck the woman.

"It's a very difficult situation. We feel terrible for the woman and her family and I feel terrible for the the man who was trying to truly help someone. It's a lose-lose situation here."

The Wayne County Prosecutor's Office will determine whether charges will be filed.
