Democratic gubernatorial candidate Gretchen Whitmer gets a big boost in her bid for governor with an endorsement from the 140,000-member Michigan Education Association.

"At a time when public education is under attack nationwide, Gretchen Whitmer is the leader Michigan needs so that every educator is respected, every school has the necessary resources, and every student has the opportunity to get a well-rounded education that leads to a great job," MEA President Paula Herbart says in a statement Monday.

"When Michigan’s students and educators have needed a fighter, they’ve turned to Whitmer. Together, we’re going to make sure every student, regardless of their zip code, gets a quality public education. Without doubt, Whitmer is our strongest candidate to take back the governor’s office and we are with her every step of the way."

The Michigan Education Association, which delivered the endorsement before a crowd in Center Line, is the state’s largest school employee union, representing teachers, support staff, higher education faculty and staff and retirees, in every county in the state.

"It means bodies, it means networking and it’s very important in the primary race because they have people all across the state,” political consultant Ed Sarpolus tells the Detroit Free Press. “If the MEA is endorsing this early, it means the push to find somebody to replace Gretchen isn’t going anywhere."
