In New York City, last call for booze at bars is 4 a.m. In Chicago, spots with tavern licenses are open until 4 a.m. and 5 a.m. on Sunday. District of Columbia watering holes don't shut until 3 a.m. on weekends.
So now comes this:
State Sen. Dennis Hertel proposes legislation to let Detroit bars in the city's central business district keep serving past the current 2 a.m. deadline, until 4 a.m. on weekends and holidays, Kathleen Gray of the Detroit Free Press reports,
It's a way to compete against big cities in other states.
"I grew up in city of Detroit and spend a lot of time there. When you look at conventions and competition from a lot of other places in other states, Detroit’s at a disadvantage for having a central business district that can go into later hours," says Hertel, D-East Lansing.
The notion seems like a longshot in a Senate where Republicans outrank Hertel's party by 27-11. A similar bill last legislative session didn't reach the floor for a vote.
In the state House, Republicans have a 63-46 majority, with one vacancy.
