Fan expectations before the season began were tempered. Few expected great things for the Detroit Red Wings this season. But they did hope for some victories.

So far, it's looking pretty pathetic. On Monday night the team lost 7-3 on the road to the Montreal Canadiens.

Helene St. James of the Detroit Free Press writes:

How do the Detroit Red Wings salvage this mess? How do they prove they’re better than what they’ve shown the past two games?

Six games into their season, the Wings have yet to win. Where the first week saw them at least look competitive, the second week has seen them run out of buildings, humiliated. As bad as it was over the weekend to explain an 8-2 shellacking at Boston, two days later the Wings had to parse a 7-3 loss at Montreal.

“We don’t want to travel around and lose with these numbers,” Gustav Nyquist said Monday at Bell Centre. “It’s embarrassing.” So how could they not have a better response?

“That is a great question,” defenseman Niklas Kronwall said. “There was a lot of talk of we have to do this, we have to do that. I know it’s two games now where it’s kind of looked the same — decent start, did a lot of good things off the forecheck. We have to stick with it, we can’t just fall apart like that and start running around with our heads off. We have to look ourselves in the mirror. We have to be better in here as a team."
