Back in 1968, Tigers catcher Bill Freehan, a strapping fella, helped the team win the World Series.
Now, Freehan, 76, has dementia and is under the care of Hospice of Michigan at his home in northern Michigan, reports Jeff Seidel of the Detroit Free Press, who describes Freehan and his wife Pat Freehan watching the World Series:
“Boston is playing,” Pat Freehan tells Bill, her husband.
But she doesn’t know whether he can fully understand her.
Freehan, one of the greatest Detroit Tigers ever, cannot walk, cannot speak and cannot eat on his own.
“Is he aware?” Pat asks. “I don’t know. Those are the things you don’t know."
She pauses.
"But his World Series trophy is on the mantel," she says.
Pat Freehan has decided to share details about her husband’s situation because she feels indebted to Hospice of Michigan. They've been married 55 years.
