You have to give John James his due. He attended West Point and spent eight years in the military, including multiple duty tours in Iraq.
That said, the Trump-supporting James, who lives in suburban Farmington Hills, shouldn’t get a free pass for making the most outrageous claims of any Michigan candidate in 2018 in a naked attempt to dupe African Americans into voting for him.
On Tuesday night, he lost to Democratic incumbent Sen. Debbie Stabenow. But what really makes him a loser is the offensive things he said, or didn't say, during the campaign.

First a Virginia political action committee ran a radio ad, beginning last month, suggesting his opponent Sen. Debbie Stabenow was guilty of “black genocide” simply because she supports women’s reproductive rights. Granted, the ad wasn’t paid directly by his campaign, but even after black ministers raised objections, a shameful James, who is pro-life, kept silent.
First off, not only is it a ridiculous insult to Stabenow, but also to anyone -- man or woman, Democrat or Republican -- who is pro-choice.
Now, let's go to the next low point in this campaign in a recent commercial that ran around the state.
He referred to the Democratic party as “godless,” though many people of faith -- Christians, Jews, Muslims, rabbis, pastors, imams and priests -- consider themselves Democrats.
Who made James God?
In that same commercial, he complained that the Democratic Party has taken black voters for granted. I agree with him there.
But what does he offer as an alternative? Donald Trump?
There are losers in campaigns. And then there is John James in a category unto himself.
