Deaf Performers Join DSO Dec. 16

A trio of deaf artists join the Detroit Symphony Orchestra to produce music, including Motown hits, Dec. 16. at 7 p.m. at Orchestra Hall.

The concert, titled "The Deaf and Loud Symphonic Experience," will include performances by percussionist Evelyn Glennie, "America’s Got Talent" finalist Mandy Harvey and hip-hop star Sean Forbes. All three are deaf.

Sly5thAve will conduct arrangements of Detroit-centric hits by hometown composer Jake Bass, who will perform througout the concert. Grammy and Academy Award winning musicians Jeff Bass and Luis Resto will also appear.

Jake Bass

Jake Bass is the son of Jeff Bass. Jeff and brother Mark Bass, Oak Park natives, make up the Bass Brothers production team that discovered Eminem. Artists will perform Eminem's "Lose Yourself" as a finale.

The concert will benefit the Deaf Professional Arts Network, a Detroit nonprofit bringing music and culture to the deaf and hard-of-hearing community.

Performances will be in American Sign Language, accompanied by large-screen videos with lyrics.

After the concert, a "silent disco" will feature a vibrating dance floor and headphones for invited ticketholders from the deaf community. 

“The DSO prides itself on being the most accessible orchestra on the planet, so we were eager to collaborate," Vice President and General Manager Erik Rönmark says in a statement. “It’s a one-of-a-kind event with outstanding musicians who happen to be deaf.”
