Three thousand dollars. That's how much an 8th grader who was shot in the head in a driveby says it will take for her to have some peace of mind.
Myonna Lanton says she's been living with anxiety since she was shot while standing in her living room on the west side of Detroit in October. Now, she's launched a GoFundMe in hopes of relocating to a safer place. Myonna currently lives on Appoline Street off of 7 Mile. The GoFundMe would cover moving expenses.
WXYZ's Kim Russell caught up with Myonna on Christmas — a holiday the girl and her mother weren't sure she'd live to see.
Russell reports that Myonna shared her story in an effort to show how gun violence impacts innocent youth.
Myonna spoke to WXYZ through tears:
"Just stop," the teen said. "I missed three weeks of school, but for what? It's like for what? I wasn't even doing anything."
Myonna says she believes the shooters targeted the wrong home on Appoline near Seven Mile Road in Detroit. Now, there are surveillance cameras outside so Myonna can look outside whenever she feels afraid, which is far too often, especially since the people responsible for the shooting remain free. Witnesses describe the the suspects as three masked men.
"I am so tired of living here. I just want to move," Myonna said.
Her campaign had raised $310 as of Wednesday morning.
About 60 kids were wounded by shootings in Detroit last year. As of the midpoint of this year, the city appeared on pace to reach a similar total in 2018.
