At This 'Cannabis-Enhanced' Detroit Studio, High Noon Yoga Really Means Just That

January 08, 2019, 10:20 AM

A decidedly different yoga studio in Detroit's Rivertown promotes classes as a way to "get blazed."

"We start with a community smoke sesh from 1:30-2 p.m. (BYOB)," says a listing for this Sunday's free introductory session at ElevatedYogi, where BYOB means bring your own bud. "We often surprise participants with special gifts," the registration page adds enticingly.

The message at its Instagram page is, ahem, blunt: "Let's get high and so some yoga."

This relaxation salon at 2930 E. Jefferson Ave. describes itself as a "cannabis-enhanced yoga studio." The next "Saturdaze" classes (right) are pitched as "medicating and meditating. . . . Come and get blazed,"

In the latest Detour Detroit newsletter, editor Kate Abbey-Lambertz suggests: "Block off most of the afternoon: This isn’t a 50-minutes-and-out kind of studio." She describes classes as "traditional, if sometimes extra relaxed," and adds:

The law offices of Cannabis Counsel provide the Rivertown class space; the building is also home to a cannabis medical clinic. A nearby dispensary is one of the event’s hosts. . . .

Leonard Coklow, 29, opened the studio back in 2016 after he got into yoga and healthier eating. He heard from yoga instructors who smoked before class, and combining two of his interests seemed like an obvious next step. . . . The business has since grown slowly and steadily, and now offers daily classes with a rotating cast of nine instructors. . . .

Coklow said legalization has brought more attention and new students.
