Dan Loepp's bonuses are been framed as an injustice by health care affordability advocates.

Another year, another record bonus for the head of Michigan's largest insurer. Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan CEO Dan Loepp last year brought in a whopping $19 million, the Detroit Free Press reports — well above his $13M in 2017.

Loepp's pay has ticked up annually in recent years. According to the Free Press, Loepp made $9 million in 2015, and $11 million in 2016. Bonuses account for nearly all of each figure; Loepp's base pay is $1.5 milion.

The latest bonus makes Loepp one of the five highest-paid Blue Cross Blue Shield CEOs in the country. He's had the job as head of BCBSM since 2006.

Loepp's annual bonuses have been framed as an injustice by health care affordability advocates, who point out hundreds of thousands of Michiganders remain uninsured.

Blue Cross, however, reportedly doesn't see things that way:

"We are keeping health care affordable to the best of our ability here in Michigan," Blue Cross spokesman Andy Hetzel told reporters Friday. "We think he earns the money that he makes."
