Update: U-M Active Shooter Alert Is a False Alarm Prompted by Popping Balloons

Update, 8:26 p.m. Saturday: In the end, police didn't find evidence of a shooting after conducting a thorough search, the Detroit Free Press reports.  The search tied up the center of the campus for hours Saturday.

The Washtenaw County Sheriff's Office said calls about a presumed shooting were caused by14 girls popping balloons, which others mistook for gunshots.

The University of Michigan issued an active shooter alert late Saturday afternoon on campus at Mason Hall, however, there does not appear to be a threat on campus. 

An initial tweet and "e-alert" warned of an active shooter in Mason Hall, adding "run, hide, fight." At 5:34, an update was issued that said no did not appear to be an active threat.

Mason Hall is an academic building on The Diag.

Police radio traffic indicated officers are searching nearby buildings floor-by-floor.
