Voters who want to avoid Election Day lines can pick up absentee ballots in person today and Monday.
Under state law, all municipal clerks' offices are open until at least 2 p.m. the Saturday before an election to pass out absentee ballots that can be turned in there or mailed by Tuesday.
"We've had a pretty steady stream of people every day for the last week or so," said City Clerk Aileen Bittner of Troy told the Detroit Free Press.
Detroiters can get and cast ballots at the elections office, 2978 W. Grand Blvd., and satellite sites at Wayne County Community College District campuses in northwest Detroit, 8200 W. Outer Drive, and on the east side at 5901 Conner.
In Detroit, 903 people voted at three polling sites last Saturday with absentee ballots. Elections officials expect to at least double that number today.
"If you're eligible, we're encouraging you to vote," said Daniel Baxter, Detroit's deputy city clerk.
It's especially important this year to consider voting absentee, clerks said, because of a long ballot that is packed with federal, state, judicial and local candidates, statewide ballot proposals and local issues.
Most voters will face a ballot that is filled both sides of one page. But in Wayne County, voters will face two pages, filled on both sides of both pages, which will make the lines on Election Day even longer.
On Monday, voters have until 4 p.m. to apply for, fill out and leave an absentee ballot at their city or township office.
