Even temporary openings are good news for some job-seekers. The Postal Service and two other shippers will fill more than 2,000 holiday season slots, up by at least 200 jobs from this time last year.

United Parcel Service, FedEx Corp. and the United States Postal Service all plan to hire more workers this year, Crain's Detroit Business reports.

UPS said it expects an 8-percent increase in shipping volume through the Detroit, Ann Arbor and Flint regions this holiday season.

The Atlanta -based company, which plans to hire 1,400 seasonal workers in the region, has filled about 420 spots so far.

The positions, which are mostly driver helpers and package handlers, start at $8.50 per hour. The centers of hiring for UPS are Detroit, Ann Arbor and Flint.
