May 09, 2012, 8:01 AM

After being beaten down like a pinata during the latest recession, Metro Detroit is showing very hopeful signs in the job market.

The Detroit Free Press reports that Metro Detroit came in second out of the 100 largest metropolitan areas in the U.S. when it came to the largest gains in manufacturing jobs over the last two years. The Other only city in Michigan to make the Top 10 list was Grand Rapids, which was ranked 10.
Not so bad being number two in this case.

The list, compiled by the Brookings Institution in Washington, showed a 12.1 percent increase in manufacturing jobs in Metro Detroit from the first quarter of 2010 to the fourth quarter of 2011, according to the Freep.

The national average increase was 2.7 percent.

Detroit only lagged behind Charleston, S.C.

The Freep reported that Detroit had the sixth largest number of manufacturing jobs out of the 100 largest metro areas in the nation. About 1 of 10 jobs in the metro area is in manufacturing.
