Change.org petition to let others know her situation could happen to them, reports Amy Bell of The Oakland Press. She also hopes public attention will prod a private lender to waive her obligation to repay the debt, as the federal government did on two other student loans that she also cosigned.
“I don’t want anyone to go through what I’m going through,” she said. “You’re grieving for your child and you have people calling you for money to pay for something you can’t use. My baby took it to the grave with him.”
Jermaine earned a degree from Full Sail University in Florida after graduating from Willow Run High School, the newspaper says. He later moved to Atlanta to pursue a music career, and was Edwards' only son.
The outstanding loan is held by First Marblehead Corp., a tuition lender in Boston.
