December 04, 2012, 2:41 PM

The Ilitch organization announced Tuesday it is seeking to create a new district in Detroit where a multipurpose events center along with retail, residential housing and office facilities would be built.

The emphasis was on "seeking" and "exploring." There is no timeline, and no specifics.

The news came out of Lansing, where Ilitch Co. officials said the passage of a House bill that allows a downtown development authority to continue capturing revenue would help move forward plans that include, among other things, a new downtown events center.

Said Chris Ilitch, president and CEO of Ilitch Holdings, Inc.: "We have a tremendous opportunity through a large-scale project to make a positive impact on our community."
