Schurr, 31, waived his right to a discharge hearing, City Manager Mark Washington said Wednesday, and added, according to The Detroit News:

"... Therefore, I have decided to terminate Mr. Schurr’s employment with the Grand Rapids Police Department effective June 10, 2022. Due to the ongoing criminal matter and the potential for civil litigation, I will not be providing any additional comment concerning Mr. Schurr at this time."

Schurr was charged with second-degree murder last week in connection with Lyoya's death. Schurr posted bail and is free, with the first probable-cause hearing in the case set for June 21.
